Province-Wide Portable
AC Unit Installation Program

The Portable AC Unit Installation Program was an essential initiative led by the Ministry of Health and administered by BC Hydro. This program was developed in response to the increasing need for cooling solutions in homes across British Columbia, ensuring safer, more comfortable living conditions for residents during extreme heat events. As part of the program, over 25,000 portable air conditioning units were installed by It's On Electric Company in homes throughout the province.

Our Role in the Program
At It’s On Electric Company, we played a pivotal role in delivering this large-scale program efficiently and effectively. Partnering with a network of trusted electrical subcontractors, we provided comprehensive installation services across British Columbia, reaching households in urban, rural, and remote areas.

Electrical Testing and Preparation

Before installing the portable AC units, our team conducted detailed electrical assessments in each home to ensure safe and reliable operation of the new equipment. This process included:

  • Panel Capacity Testing: Verifying that each home's electrical panel could handle the additional load of the portable AC unit.

  • Circuit Inspections: Examining circuits to confirm their capacity and integrity for safe operation of the units.

  • Outlet Testing: Ensuring that power outlets met safety standards and were compatible with the AC unit requirements.

  • Electrical Upgrades: Where necessary, our team performed minor electrical upgrades, such as replacing outlets, breakers, or other components, to ensure compliance with safety regulations.

Installation of Portable AC Units

Once the homes passed the electrical safety checks, our teams proceeded with the installation of the portable AC units. This process involved:

  • Proper Placement: Identifying the most effective location for the AC unit to maximize cooling efficiency and airflow in the home.

  • Setup and Configuration: Installing and securing the unit, configuring it for optimal performance, and providing instructions for safe operation.

  • Ventilation Solutions: Installing window venting kits to ensure proper exhaust and efficient cooling.

  • Resident Education: Offering hands-on demonstrations to residents on how to operate and maintain their new AC unit effectively.

Province-Wide Delivery Through Regional Hubs

The scope of the project required a strategic approach to ensure every eligible household was served. By operating through regional hubs and leveraging our network of electrical subcontractors, we provided seamless service delivery across the province. From major cities to the most remote communities, we ensured that no household was left behind.
